Prevention is the best medicine. A saying often shared time and time again but have we really taken note of what it means? As the World Health Organisation celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, I took some time to reflect on what building healthier, happier nations means on a global scale.

I believe a worldwide health challenge must be growing obesity rates and the impact our increasing waistlines is having on our wellbeing. I weigh in on this issue in my blog which you can read on our website.

Most of our Members are associated with a work health insurance scheme. We’re launching a new promotional campaign to recognise the amazing work our Members and the organisations they work for do every day to support the nation’s wellbeing. It’s called “Taking care of the people who take care of the country.” You may see us on billboards, read about us online or in your local newspaper, or hear about us on the radio. Especially given recent weather events, it’s great to have the opportunity to acknowledge the contribution our Members make and to grow our presence so we can provide more New Zealanders, like you, with access to health and wellness services.

We’re also bringing you more member benefits including timely discounts on MoleMap skin check services and Red Cross First Aid courses. Look out for more details in this issue.

If you’d like to chat through anything in the health, wellness or preventative care space, please feel free to email me anytime at ceo@unimed.co.nz.

Winter is here, so now is the time to prepare and plan to keep well this season.

Our friends at HealthNavigator.org.nz have great advice on how to take care of your wellbeing during the cooler months, from choosing healthy foods to beating the winter blues such as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

We’ve also prepared some tips on how you can look after your mental wellbeing this season.

• Take a walk every day at midday so you experience as much natural daylight as possible.
• Keep warm at work. Is there adequate heating in your work area?
• Eat healthily. Can you supplement a pie with a hot, hearty veggie soup occasionally?
• Take up a new hobby with workmates like after work indoor cricket or an evening run together.
• Spend time with friends and family and ask how they’re feeling as the nights grow colder and longer.
• Talk it through at work, it’s more common than most people think.
