Our business’ financial year is nearing a close, and we, like so many organisations around the globe, have been riding the wave of the volatile global market.
Effects of the unrest in Ukraine and Russia have impacted the investment market, and the ongoing impact of COVID-19 on our local economy has been challenging.
We remain in a strong financial position and continue to be committed to providing exceptional value health insurance. We are always looking for opportunities to add to our offering and services in meaningful and valuable ways to you.
If you have any questions about our society, please email me anytime at ceo@unimed.co.nz.
Ngā mihi nui,
Louise

As you know, we are passionate about providing more New Zealanders and their whānau with easier access to the best health options and outcomes.
To ensure we continue to do this, we have been reviewing our current products and services and have sought feedback by surveying some of our Members on what’s important to you.
|
While it was pleasing to hear that 62% of our members feel good about their health and wellbeing, we’d like to help this number increase.
The survey also revealed many of you are focused and engaged in your personal health and wellness, with over 67% regularly spending time outdoors, 52% regularly exercising, and 72% acknowledging their lives have purpose and meaning.
As a result of such fantastic insights, we’re going to spend more time analysing all the feedback and use this to help shape further enhancements to our products, now and into the future.
As a Member-first society, we’re focussed on always providing our Members with personal value for money offerings. Attributes we will always be committed to and passionate about.

This month is Men’s Health Awareness Month, and with men making up over half of our membership, we thought it was important to touch on some concerning male-related health themes.
|
Heart disease and cancer are the leading causes of death for men in New Zealand. Smokers and those with high cholesterol, higher weights and high blood pressure are obviously more at risk. If you’re worried about your heart health or concerned for a friend or family member, there are many helpful online tools.
Do you want to check your heart health?

It’s also a fact that Māori and Pacific men are overrepresented in lower life expectancy, with heart disease and cancer playing a part. Last month, our blog focused on the topic of smoking, and with approximately 24% of Māori men smoking and 17% of Pasifika men smoking too, we wanted to make the point that, while there’s been a decline over the years, smoking still causes significant health implications.
Add in poor diet, obesity and the worrying rise in vaping, and the risks remain high. Again, if you need advice or want to talk about quitting smoking, there are fantastic online tools to help you start the journey towards better health.

We’re all aware of the mental health challenges facing our country right now, and tragically, suicide is a leading cause of death for young male adults.
|
It’s a statistic we all know is totally unacceptable, but according to the Ministry of Health’s 2018 report, of every 100,000 males aged between 15 - 24 years of age, 27 took their own lives.
We know the country faces some confronting facts around youth suicide, and we’re determined and committed to playing a bigger role in supporting the mental wellbeing of New Zealanders.
It’s why we have partnered with Clearhead, an online or in-person counselling service, providing three free sessions for all Members till the end of 2022. We urge all Members to take advantage of this benefit if you’re at all feeling stressed or just want someone to chat to.

We’ve recently published a new article on LinkedIn regarding vaping. It’s something many of you with children will want to be aware of. Vaping is on the rise with youth, and a recent survey points to a link between vaping and depression. What are your views on vaping? We’d be interested to hear your opinions.
